RECORDING LIFE STORIES -THE STORY KEEPERS PROCESS

How do we go about recording life stories. Let me explain a little about The Story Keepers tried and tested and highly effective method.

THE PLANNING STAGE

We start by talking.

First, we need to find out a little about you and your life, and also how you feel about recording life stories. We will discuss who we are filming or recording. Maybe it is you, or maybe you are commissioning a life story film, book or audio memoir for someone else. We will also discuss the process and we can try and answer your questions.

We will agree on which topics you would like to include in the interview, as well as any that you don't want to cover.

From these discussions, we will create an interview guide to steer us through the actual interview. At this point, you might also start finding photographs, or even film footage (digital) to include if we are creating a life story film or book.

We will agree a time and a place for the interview. Where possible, long interviews will be spread over two or more days.

THE INTERVIEW

Most people say that the interview is a really enjoyable and interesting experience, allowing them to recollect memories that they hadn’t thought of for a while.

We usually film or record the interview in your home (see FAQ’s), and take time over the whole experience. We will first agree on the very best place; maybe in your favourite chair, for example. We will then need a few minutes to set up, test and check the equipment.

Generally speaking, an interview can last up to two hours in one go, but we will take a break whenever needed.

After the interview, we will scan pictures and photos, as agreed, so that they can be incorporated into your film. We may also take a few extra photos to also add to the film, maybe of the front of your house, or garden, for example.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW

We now need to edit your film, book or audio recording. We will aim to get your final product back as quickly as we can, let me know of any particular deadlines.

‘I totally forgot that I was being filmed, which I don't usually like. It was very easy to talk about myself.’

‘Alice's immersion in the project made it for us.‘
